Ascan Mergenthaler – Herzog & de Meuron

People

Ascan Mergenthaler is a Senior Partner at Herzog & de Meuron. He is in charge of projects in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and has led several international museum projects, including the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Parrish Art Museum on Long Island, New York, the Tate Modern Project in London, as well as M+, a new museum for visual culture in Hong Kong. The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Park Avenue Armory in New York, and Tai Kwun, a Centre for Heritage & Arts in Hong Kong are notable examples of performing arts buildings he was responsible for and highlight his profound knowledge and interest in heritage and adaptive re-use. His experience in educational buildings includes the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford and the Royal College of Art Battersea Campus in London. He has led important residential and hospitality projects such as 56 Leonard and the 215 Chrystie in New York, One Park Drive in London and the Volkshaus Hotel and Brasserie in Basel. Currently he is working on several high-profile projects, such as the Neue Nationalgalerie – Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts in Berlin, the Lusail Museum in Doha and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to his dedicated work on architectural projects, Ascan is a member of Herzog & de Meuron’s Strategic Board and oversees our Interiors and Objects teams.

Ascan Mergenthaler first joined Herzog & de Meuron as an intern in 1993. After completing his studies at Stuttgart University and The Bartlett, University College London, he became an Architect at Herzog & de Meuron in 1998. He was promoted to Associate in 2001, to Partner in 2004, and to Senior Partner in 2009.
