Herzog & de Meuron

It all started with our love of the game. The first stadium we had the privilege of building was for FC Basel, our hometown team. From Allianz Arena in Munich to the National Stadium in Beijing, from Stade Bordeaux to Stamford Bridge in London, we design in response to the perspective of the fans, placing great importance on their perception of the game and their emotions – they are brought as close to the playing field as possible. A dense, concentrated atmosphere is created, with little to distract from the pitch.

Despite this inward concentration, the stadia make an impact on the city and the surrounding landscape. How people move towards the stadium, how they move into it and through it, is of primary importance – and differs greatly depending on whether a stadium sits in a peri-urban condition or within the fabric of the city itself. Each design is conceived for the place and the respective club. While they are all dramatically different from one another, all our stadiums are shaped by an awareness of sport’s ever increasing social significance.
