A Magnet

The CaixaForum is conceived as an urban magnet attracting not only art-lovers but all people of Madrid and from outside. The attraction will not only be CaixaForum’s cultural program, but also the building itself, insofar that its heavy mass, is detached from the ground in apparent defiance of the laws of gravity and, in a real sense, draws the visitors inside.

A New Address for the Arts

The CaixaForum-Madrid stands on an advantageous site facing the Paseo del Prado and the Botanical Garden vis à vis. This new address for the arts is located in an area occupied until now by unspectacular urban structures, the Central Eléctrica Power Station, and a gas station. The classified brick walls of the former power station are reminiscences of the early industrial age in Madrid, while the gas station, a purely functional structure, was clearly out of place. Like a vineyard that could never develop its full potential because it was planted with the wrong grape, this prominent location could not develop its full potential. The demolition of the gas station created a small plaza between the Paseo del Prado and the new CaixaForum in the converted power station.

A Spectacular Transformation

The only material of the old power station that we could use was the classified brick shell. In order to conceive and insert the new architectural components of the CaixaForum, we began with a surgical operation, separating and removing the base and the parts of the building no longer needed. This opened a completely novel and spectacular perspective that simultaneously solved a number of problems posed by the site. The removal of the base of the building left a covered plaza under the brick shell, which now appears to float above the street level. This sheltered space under the CaixaForum offers shade to visitors who want to spend time or meet outside, and at the same time, it is the entrance to the Forum itself. Problems such as the narrowness of the surrounding streets, the placement of the main entrance, and the architectural identity of this contemporary art institution are addressed and solved in a single urban and sculptural gesture.

A Construction below and a Construction above Ground

The separation of the structure from the ground level creates two worlds: one below and the other above the ground. The “underworld” buried beneath the topographically landscaped plaza provides space for a theater/auditorium, service rooms, and several parking spaces. The multi-storied building above ground houses the entrance lobby and galleries, a restaurant and administrative offices. There is a contrast between the flexible and loft-like character of the exhibition spaces and the spatial complexity of the top floor with its restaurant /bar and the offices. The surprising sculptural aspect of the CaixaForum’s silhouette is no mere architectural fancy, but reflects the roofscape of the surrounding buildings.

Ein Magnet

Das CaixaForum ist ein Magnet nicht nur für Kunstliebhaber, sondern für alle aus Madrid und von überall her auf der Welt. Nicht nur das Kunstprogramm des CaixaForums wird diese Magnetwirkung haben, sondern auch das Gebäude und der Ort selbst, insofern, dass der Bau ganz direkt und wörtlich als Magnet verstanden werden kann, weil sich das schwere, mit alten Ziegelsteinen des Vorgängerbaus und plastisch geformten Gusseisenplatten verkleidete Volumen – scheinbar der Schwerkraft trotzend – vom Boden ablöst und die Besucher förmlich in sich aufsaugt.

Ein neuer Ort für Kunst

Das CaixaForum-Madrid liegt in privilegierter Lage am Paseo del Prado, vis à vis des Botanischen Gartens. Dieser Ort der Kunst ist an einer Stelle entstanden, wo einst ein aus urbanistischer Sicht völlig unspektakuläres enges Gassengeviert die Bauten eines Elektrizitätswerks (Mediodía Power Station) und einer Tankstelle beherbergte. Die denkmalgeschützte Backsteinhülle des Elektrizitätswerks zeugt von einem alten, vergangenen Madrid der frühen Industriezeit, während die Tankstelle als reiner Zweckbau hier deplaziert war. Wie ein Rebberg, der mit einer unpassenden Rebsorte bepflanzt nie sein volles Potenzial entfalten wird, war dieses Geviert an so prominenter Stelle mit solchen Bauten und den entsprechenden Funktionen falsch genutzt. Die Tankstelle wurde abgebrochen, so dass zwischen dem Paseo del Prado und dem zum CaixaForum umgestalteten Elektrizitätswerk ein kleiner Platz entstehen konnte.

Eine spektakuläre Transformation

Das einzige noch verwendbare Material des alten Elektrizitätswerks war seine denkmalgeschützte Backsteinhülle. Gleichsam mit einem chirurgischen Eingriff haben wir zunächst den Sockel und die anderen nicht mehr gebrauchten Teile des Bauwerks abgetrennt und entfernt, um an dieser Stelle die neuen architektonischen Elemente des CaixaForum Projekts hinzuzudenken und einzufügen. Dabei eröffnete sich eine völlig neue, spektakuläre Perspektive, die mehrere anstehende Probleme des Orts auf einen Streich zu lösen vermochte: Das Abtrennen des Gebäudesockels schafft einen frei zugänglichen, gedeckten Platz unter dem Backsteinkörper, der nun über dem Strassenniveau zu schweben scheint. Dieser gedeckte Raum unter dem CaixaForum ist Schatten spendender Aufenthaltsort und Treffpunkt und dient zudem als Eingangsort zum Forum selbst. Das Problem der räumlichen Enge des umgebenden Gassengevierts, die Frage nach der Platzierung des Haupteingangs und die Frage nach der architektonischen Identität einer zeitgenösschen Kunstinstitution konnten mit einer einzigen städtebaulichen und plastischen Geste gelöst und beantwortet werden.

Ein unterirdischer und ein oberirdischer Baukörper

Das Abtrennen des Baukörpers vom Strassenniveau schafft zwei Welten: eine unterirdische und eine oberirdische. Die unterhalb der topografisch verformten Platzoberfläche eingegrabene “Unterwelt” beherbergt ein Theater/Auditorium, sowie Nebenräume und einige Autoabstellplätze. Im oberen Baukörper sind auf mehreren Etagen die Eingangshalle, Ausstellungsräume, sowie zuoberst Administration und ein Restaurant untergebracht. Dabei kontrastiert die loftartige, flexible räumliche Gestaltung der Ausstellungsräume mit der verschachtelten räumlichen Komplexität des obersten Stockwerks mit Restaurant/Bar und Büros. Die überraschende Plastizität des Bauprofils des CaixaForums schliesslich entspringt nicht etwa einer zufälligen Laune der Architekten, sondern reflektiert vielmehr die Silhouette der umgebenden Dachlandschaften des Quartiers.

Un imán

El CaixaForum se ha concebido como una suerte de imán urbano que atrae no sólo a los amantes del arte, sino a todos los madrileños y a quienes visitan la ciudad. Además del programa cultural que va a ofrecer la institución, ese magnetismo lo provoca el propio edificio, cuya poderosa masa se eleva sobre el plano del suelo en aparente desafío a las leyes de la gravedad y con el efecto real de atraer al público hacia su interior.

Nuevo domicilio para las artes

El CaixaForum Madrid se levanta en un privilegiado emplazamiento a orillas del Paseo del Prado y frente al Jardín Botánico. Este nuevo domicilio para las artes ocupa una zona hasta hace poco carente de interés y con construcciones como la central eléctrica y una gasolinera. Los muros de ladrillo de la vieja central forman parte del patrimonio arquitectónico de Madrid y son testimonio de su pasado industrial, pero la gasolinera era una dotación puramente funcional y ya claramente fuera de lugar. Como un viñedo que no puede dar el fruto esperado por haberse plantado con un tipo de uva equivocado, este significativo enclave no había desarrollado todas sus posibilidades. La demolición de la estación de servicio permitió crear una pequeña plaza entre el Paseo del Prado y el nuevo CaixaForum alojado en la antigua central.

Transformación espectacular

El único material de la vieja central eléctrica que podía aprovecharse era la carcasa de ladrillo, que está catalogada. Para orquestar e insertar los nuevos componentes arquitectónicos del proyecto del CaixaForum, empezamos con una operación quirúrgica, separando y eliminando el zócalo y las partes del edificio que ya no iban a ser necesarias. Esta operación proporcionó una perspectiva enteramente nueva y espectacular de la vieja construcción, al tiempo que resolvió una serie de problemas relacionados con el emplazamiento. Al suprimir la base del edificio apareció un espacio abierto y cubierto bajo la carcasa cerámica, que ahora parece flotar sobre el nivel de la calle. El nuevo espacio cubierto bajo el CaixaForum es un punto de encuentro que ofrece su protección a los visitantes y simultáneamente configura el acceso al propio edificio. Pueden afrontarse y resolverse así, con un solo gesto de carácter urbano y escultórico, problemas tales como la estrechez de las calles circundantes, la localización de la entrada principal y la identidad arquitectónica de esta institución dedicada al arte contemporáneo.

Una construcción bajo y sobre rasante

La separación del edificio respecto al nivel de la calle crea dos mundos: uno bajo el suelo y otro por encima de éste. El “mundo subterráneo” sepultado bajo la plaza topográficamente modelada proporciona espacio para acomodar un teatro-auditorio, algunas plazas de aparcamiento y otros servicios. El volumen sobre rasante aloja el vestíbulo y las salas de exposición, un restaurante y oficinas. Aquí, el carácter flexible y abierto de las áreas expositivas contrasta con la complejidad espacial de la zona de oficinas y restaurante que corona el edificio. La sorprendente imagen escultórica que ofrece la silueta del CaixaForum no es una mera fantasía arquitectónica, sino el reflejo del paisaje que ofrecen las cubiertas de los edificios vecinos.

Process

The former power station is tucked away between the narrow lanes of the old town and the Paseo del Prado.

The plinth is removed and the building extended both upwards and downwards. The superimposed structure has incisions echoing the roofscape of the neighboring buildings. With the plinth removed, the building becomes a floating volume over a plaza that runs through to the Paseo del Prado and opens up the narrow maze of alleyways.

Variations and production of the metal panels for the facade in the color of the old red bricks.

The former power station is gutted, leaving only the historic walls.

Weight and lightness: an iron helmet for the roof, a net structure for the plaza and foyer, a conical stairwell.
