The United Kingdom is of particular significance to Herzog & de Meuron. Tate Modern, our first major international project, opened in 2000, and we have been active in the UK ever since. Our local presence gives us a greater understanding of Britain’s cultural diversity, open mindedness, and the high standard placed on architecture, all of which have made it possible for us to engage in a number of projects. Our UK portfolio ranges from private houses to urban masterplans such as London Olympics 2012, and large-scale planning for infrastructural projects such as Stamford Bridge Stadium and Liverpool Street Station in London. In addition, we have undertaken several important projects like the One Park Drive residential tower and the research institute for AstraZeneca’s headquarters in Cambridge. With the Laban Dance Centre and Battersea Campus for the Royal College of Art in London, and the Blavatnik School of Government in Oxford, we have made three significant contributions in the field of educational institutions.
