Herzog & de Meuron

Herzog & de Meuron has maintained a presence in Spain since the 1980’s. Our first work in the region was an urbanistic proposal for Barcelona as a response to a housing project competition in 1989. The second, in 1990, was a video installation at the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya. From this early conceptual start, we developed landmark projects through our local site offices – CaixaForum and the BBVA Headquarters in Madrid, the Forum 2004 Building and Plaza in Barcelona, and the Tenerife Espacio de las Artes and the Plaza de España in Tenerife. These projects have had an impact both on their surroundings and on our practice.

After a brief hiatus, we reestablished the Barcelona office in 2025 to serve global demands while exploring new opportunities. Our studio in Barcelona ensures strategic partnerships with planners, close contact with our clients, onsite presence throughout the development and execution of projects, and reflects our long-term commitment to Catalonia and to Spain as a whole. Our Barcelona team embodies Herzog & de Meuron’s culture, work ethic, and professionalism. They are well-versed in regional planning regulations and construction methodologies and are involved from initial contact with all stakeholders to the handover of a finished project.
