The antenna tower was constructed in the mid-1980s as infrastructure for telecommunications. Due to its exposed location at over 3000 meters above sea level, it was built with an exceptionally robust design: a concrete core deeply anchored in the rock, a massive base, and a precisely engineered steel structure.
Following its acquisition by TITLIS Bergbahnen, redundant antenna structures were removed and the remaining required ones consolidated at roof level. The project includes the addition of two horizontal volumes and a viewing platform to the tower, new vertical circulation, and a reworked base and tunnel.
The existing concrete base, anchored in the rock, is expanded to accommodate visitor access, back of house facilities, and a snow groomer garage. A tunnel, created during the tower’s construction, provides a connection to the mountain station while housing the technical infrastructure linking the two structures.
Several full-scale studies were conducted to explore the structure and materiality of the circulation towers and horizontal volumes. A mockup tested the visual qualities of the glass and steel.
The project repurposes the robust steel structure of the existing tower. The new additions respect this materiality, extending the logic of the structure through the use of galvanized steel and glass. Connections follow standard industrial steel construction techniques.
The project was shaped by the severe climatic conditions at the mountain summit, which required careful planning and coordination. Materials were delivered by cable car or helicopter, and construction needed to be adapted to changing weather, snow accumulation, and limited visibility.
The interior is designed to be welcoming and functional, with a central open hall, an observation deck, lockers, restaurant, and retail spaces. The palette references the colors and textures of the alpine landscape. The restaurant is fully lined in wood, creating a warm, sheltered atmosphere.
New furniture was developed for the restaurant, alongside custom lighting.
