NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — Powerhouse Arts has been awarded the 2024 AIANY Design Award. Ascan Mergenthaler received the award on behalf of the project team at the AIA Honors and Awards ceremony on April 12. The award celebrates successful collaborations between architects, clients, and consultants in achieving design excellence in New York City.

Furthermore, Powerhouse Arts was awarded the Lucy G. Moses 2024 Preservation Award for outstanding preservation granted by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Eric Shiner, director of Powerhouse Arts, received the award on behalf of the project collaborators.

Built in 1903, the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power Station is one of the last historic structures on the Gowanus Canal. The project included the strategic restoration and repurposing of the existing brick and steel structure of the Turbine Hall as well as a new addition. Consisting of 170,000 square feet of workshop space for fabrication in wood, metal, ceramics, textile and print, the redevelopment project transforms an existing, derelict structure on a contaminated site into a center for artists, fabricators and other workers and ensures that the industrial legacy of the site will extend into the next century.
