Talstation Unterwasser Opens

TOGGENBURG, SWITZERLAND – Yesterday marked the opening of the new Talstation Unterwasser. The station is another joint project between Toggenburg Bergbahnen and Herzog & de Meuron. It serves as the central access point to the Chäserrugg area throughout the year. From here, visitors take the funicular to Iltios and have the option to continue with the cable car to the Chäserrugg mountain station. The project was realized in collaboration with Studio NOUN, using locally sourced materials and prefabricated timber modules, ensuring ecological sustainability and efficient construction in just eight months.

The new station features a classic train station design with a central open hall, a café, lockers, visitor information, and office space. The large gabled roof extends towards the village, creating an inviting forecourt with a fountain made from stones of the former valley station.

This project continues the long-standing collaboration between Toggenburg Bergbahnen and Herzog & de Meuron, which began over ten years ago. The valley station is typologically and constructively related to the mountain station of the cable car on Chäserrugg, which was expanded and renewed in 2015.

From December 14, 2024, the new station will be officially open to the public.
