Process

ChĂ€serrugg has been welcoming tourists ever since the construction of the Unterwasser – Iltios – ChĂ€serrugg cable cars. The valley station in Unterwasser serves as the central gateway to the ChĂ€serrugg area all year round. The first cable lift company in Toggenburg was founded in 1933, operating the funicular railway Unterwasser-Iltios.

Local limestone was used as the building material for the original structures of the Iltiosbahn, including the valley station and the viaduct. While the valley station needed to be replaced, the viaduct remains.

The design of the large gabled roof of the new station was extensively studied to ensure it accommodates the funicular. The roof creates an inviting forecourt for visitors.

The valley station is designed as a classic train station, with the funicular train entering the central, open hall. The interior of the station has a cafĂ©, lockers, a visitor information desk, and offices for Klangwelt Toggenburg.

The valley station’s wooden structure was mounted and installed from late June to mid-August using prefabricated timber elements. The building is constructed using locally sourced materials by craftspeople from the Toggenburg valley — the timber was sourced from Switzerland and the wooden facade cladding comes from a nearby forest.

The installation of the new funicular carriages modernizes the transportation system for sustainable operation. The red carriages pay homage to the historic design.
