374.1 Talstation Unterwasser

The Unterwasser valley station, a bit more than an hour from Zurich and St. Gallen, has been the central access point to the Chäserrugg area both in summer and in winter. The Unterwasser-Iltios funicular was opened in 1934, followed by the cable car to Chäserrugg in 1972. The same local limestone was used as the building material for the Unterwasser station, the funicular viaduct, and the mountain station and restaurant on Iltios. Over the years, however, several stages of expansion have obscured the clarity of the original infrastructure. While the original railroad viaduct can be preserved, the valley station needs to be replaced. As part of this project, the funicular railway is also undergoing modernization to allow for a more sustainable operation.

The new valley station is strongly related to the summit station at Chäserrugg, which was extended and extensively renovated by Herzog & de Meuron in 2015, through its materiality, structure, and typology. The mass-timber building is conceived as a classic train station – the funicular runs directly into the central open hall, a meeting point for arriving and returning guests. A reception desk with tourist information point, café, lockers, and restrooms are accessible from the hall; adjacent to these facilities are offices and the necessary infrastructure for goods handling. A large, symmetrical saddle roof spans the building, and projects generously towards the village, creating an inviting forecourt.

The wooden structure will be mounted and fitted out in just one summer season in 2024. To meet high sustainability standards in the long term, the station is connected to the local heating network, and photovoltaics on the roof supply all necessary electricity.

Sowohl im Sommer als auch im Winter ist die Talstation in Unterwasser der zentrale Einstieg in das Chäserrugg Gebiet. Die Standseilbahn auf das Iltios nahm 1934 den Betrieb auf, die Luftseilbahn auf den Chäserrugg folgte 1972. Als Baumaterial wurde für die Talstation, das Viadukt der Bahn und die Bergstation mit Restaurant auf dem Iltios durchgehend lokaler Kalkstein verwendet. Mehrere Erweiterungsetappen haben die architektonische Identität der Anlage allerdings verunklärt. Die Modernisierung der Standseilbahn für einen nachhaltigeren Betrieb wird ebenfalls in diesem Projekt umgesetzt. Das ursprüngliche Bahnviadukt kann erhalten werden, während das bestehende Gebäude der Talstation ersetzt wird.

Die neue Talstation ist ein klassischer Bahnhof: Die Bahn fährt in die zentrale, offene Halle hinein. Gäste gelangen von dort aus in ein Café, zu Schliessfächern, Empfang mit Besucherinformation und Toiletten – ausserdem befinden sich angrenzend Büros und Infrastruktur für den Warenumschlag. Ein grosses Satteldach überspannt die Halle und die angegliederten Räume. Zum Dorf hin kragt es weit aus und schafft einen einladenden Vorplatz.

Der Holzbau der neuen Talstation ist ökologisch vorteilhaft und ermöglicht eine rasche Bauzeit – das Gebäude wird in nur einer Sommersaison 2024 erstellt und ausgebaut. Das Dach ist mit einer Photovoltaik-Anlage belegt. Typologisch und konstruktiv ist der neue Bahnhof mit der Bergstation der Luftseilbahn auf dem Chäserrugg verwandt, welche 2015 von Herzog & de Meuron mit einem Gipfelrestaurant erweitert und umfassend erneuert wurde.
