Herzog & de Meuron
Competition
1989

On the edge of Basel, next to the French border, a triangular Greenfield site was to be developed for housing. Herzog & de Meuron’s competition entry concerns a site along the Luzernerring, an axis that connects the urban quarter to St.Louis.

The housing layout winds along courtyards on both the street and garden sides. The courtyard facing the street is screened by means of continuous balconies that are equipped with wooden sunblinds. The apartments are laid out so as to create a stratified spatial sequence and to orient every apartment in all cardinal points.

At ground level, there would have been communal facilities and shops, thereby continuing the existing character of the street.
