Project Update
28 May 2025
BASEL, SWITZERLAND – The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, one of Europe’s oldest grand hotels, is set to unveil its redesigned spaces just in time for Art Basel in mid-June. The project reimagined the historic annex building on Schifflände, providing it with a distinctive identity that differentiates the new spaces from the original main structure. Each space was uniquely designed, offering guests new spatial experiences and atmospheres.
With origins dating back to 1681, the main building was crafted by Amadeus Merian in 1884 and later updated by Christian Lang between 2004 and 2006. During this modernization, the adjacent 1903 bank building, formerly the Basler Kantonalbank, was seamlessly integrated into the hotel ensemble, preserving the historic design language of the main building.
The redesign covers several areas: a new dining space, a banquet Hall, suites (Suite des Rois and Junior Suites), wellness area, as well as the cigar lounge “The Council”.
The dining space features a central bar with a canopy, an artwork resembling a surrealistic garden by artists Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger, surrounded by seating niches for dining and lounging. The banquet hall is now a flexible event space, with sliding walls and reflective surfaces. The Suite des Rois, previously the Presidential Suite, has moved to the bel étage, offering spacious accommodations with a balcony facing Schifflände. The Suite des Rois and Junior Suites have been redesigned for open-plan living with custom furniture, contrasting with the main building’s traditional interiors.
At the top of the building, the wellness area includes massage rooms, saunas, and a steam bath, inspired by Japanese architecture. The Council, a smoking lounge, features 570 ceramic tiles on its 7-meter-high side walls, two fireplaces, and custom-made furniture, and was completed in October 2024.
