HANGZHOU, CHINA – On-site at the Grand Canal Museum in Hangzhou, China. We take a look back at the construction of the Grand Canal Museum, taking shape along the banks of the Grand Canal — one of China’s most significant waterways connecting the country’s north and south. The project comprises a museum dedicated to the canal’s rich history, housed within a floating volume clad in blue glass that shelters a generous public space beneath. Rising behind it is the ‘Mountain’, a mineral volume accommodating office spaces. This setting embodies “water in the front, mountain in the back” – a classic Chinese ideal of harmonious integration of people, buildings and their natural environment.
