Herzog & de Meuron

BERLIN, GERMANY — On Friday, we celebrated a key milestone in the construction of Berlin Modern with a Richtfest, during which the traditional topping-out wreath was raised. In attendance were Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer, SPK President Marion Ackermann, Neue Nationalgalerie Director Klaus Biesenbach, Jacques Herzog, Ascan Mergenthaler, Tobias Winkelmann, Yasmin Kherad, Tobias Amme, Mark Bax and other members of the project team.

Berlin Modern’s independent, open form centers around people and their interaction with art—visitors will encounter art not only within the building, but also on all sides of its exterior. The new building fulfills a longstanding wish of the Neue Nationalgalerie and finally completes the Berlin Kulturforum.

Over the weekend, the construction site opened its doors to the public. Visitors were invited to explore and gain insights into the future exhibition spaces that will house the extensive 20th-century art collection. The construction is planned to complete in 2029, after which the art installation will take place. This will be followed by the initial setup of museum-specific facilities, such as storage and workshops, and the preparation of the opening exhibition.
