Herzog & de Meuron

Hong Kong has developed into a significant location in Asia for Herzog & de Meuron. We are fascinated by the presence of many different cultures, the high density of residents and the city’s rich history. Since 2006 we have been able to build up a variety of relationships here while making two important contributions to the cultural assets of the city. The Hong Kong Jockey Club commissioned us to restore and revitalize the listed Central Police Station, Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison compound – we redesigned the formerly closed off courtyards and streets into a vibrant and inclusive quarter that serves as the Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage & Arts. It has not only become a new cultural destination for discovery and exchange, but also a communal meeting place for the locals in this dense urban neighborhood. In 2013, we won the competition for the M+ Museum for Visual Culture, one of the anchor buildings within the new West Kowloon Cultural District. Since the opening of M+ in November 2021, its LED media facade has connected both parts of the city across the Victoria Harbor. Aside from their popularity as art spaces, Tai Kwun and M+ have become places for communal experience within the city.

Our studio in Hong Kong ensures strategic partnerships with planners, close contact with our clients, onsite presence throughout the development and execution of projects, and reflects our long-term commitment to the region. Our Hong Kong team embodies Herzog & de Meuron’s culture, work ethic, and professionalism. They are well-versed in local planning regulations and construction methodologies and are involved from initial contact with all stakeholders to the handover of a finished project.
