Objects

Herzog & de Meuron conceive of buildings as coherent wholes, from the load-bearing structure down to the furniture. In the course of developing our projects, we have designed over 500 objects: pieces of furniture, light fixtures, textiles, and architectural details, such as coat hooks or door handles. These objects are tailor made for specific buildings, places and the people that use them. The characteristics and means of processing materials like wood, glass, metal, or cork are as important as their texture and patina. The combination of digital and analogue processes gives these objects an appeal beyond the original context of their creation. Our Objects Department manages the pool of existing objects and creates new ones in collaboration with manufacturers, factories, and skilled craftspeople.
