Zurich City Council Approves Masterplan in Zurich-Altstetten

Bank Julius Baer and the real estate company Allreal intend to further develop their site at Altstetten railway station. The masterplan, designed in consultation with the City of Zurich, has now been approved by the City Council.

Between 2023 and 2024, a competitive process (Testplanung) involving three planning teams was carried out as the basis for the masterplan and the subsequent steps. Herzog & de Meuron’s urban design concept convinced the assessment panel and was recommended for further development into a Richtprojekt.

The densification of the site through a cluster of six high-rise buildings makes it possible to create more green areas, public open spaces, and improved pedestrian connections on ground level. The plans include a new square on Hohlstrasse, the enlargement of Altstetterplatz, and a public roof garden. Rather than pursuing a tabula rasa approach, the masterplan focuses on conversion and building on the existing fabric.

The next step will be the preparation of the Gestaltungsplan.
