Sotheby’s Madison Avenue Opens

NEW YORK, USA — Sotheby’s Madison Avenue has officially opened its doors, with a press preview today and public access beginning on November 8th at noon. The careful renovation, conducted by H&dM together with our partner architects PBDW, aimed to honor the building’s historical and architectural legacy while transforming it into an exhibition and auction venue.

Originally designed by Marcel Breuer, the building has been a sanctuary for art since 1966. Breuer’s vision was to blend modern technology with artistic expression, creating a space that transforms the energy of the street into a profound art experience.

The Breuer Building, known for its architectural significance and iconic windows, has hosted prestigious art collections over the years, including those from the Whitney, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Frick Collection. Now, it continues its legacy as an art auction house for Sotheby’s.

Key original design elements—such as the bluestone floors, coffered concrete ceilings, sculptural staircase, and bespoke lobby finishes—have been preserved, while thoughtful interventions enhance accessibility, spatial flexibility, and the visitor experience.
