Herzog & de Meuron

BLEVIO, ITALY – With the opening of L˜ARIA, our work at the Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como completes its third chapter, following the Floating Pool & Spa, the Nami Café, and the Bar & Bistro in the historic Villa Roccabruna. Set within the garden, the fine dining restaurant and its adjoining terrace and veranda continue our approach of working with what was already in place rather than pursuing a tabula rasa approach.

Inside, a large central Calacatta Oro marble bar anchors the room, serving as a buffet by day and hosting aperitivo or omakase by night. Materials were developed with local craftspeople: a Palladiana terrazzo floor referencing the traditional villas of Lake Como, rose-colored fabric wall panels embroidered with leaf motifs in collaboration with Rubelli, and a cast-glass-tiled ceiling whose colors shift with the light like the surface of the lake.

The adjoining greenhouse is shaded by latticed panels recalling the trellises of botanical gardens, their checkered shadows echoed in the Verde Alpi and Botticino marble floor. Red-lacquered chairs add vivid accents to the plant-filled room.

Within a compact footprint, the new L˜ARIA offers a rich variety of spaces and atmospheres, allowing the resort to evolve as a cohesive whole.
