Project Update
06 August 2025
NOVATO, USA — Herzog & de Meuron will lead the design of a new art and design museum for The Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, to be housed within the iconic modernist buildings of the former Birkenstock Factory in Marin County, California.
“We are honored to collaborate with the Eames Institute on this Bay Area project — a region which has significantly shaped our practice through key projects including the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Drawing on our expertise of adapting historic structures, most notably the Tate Modern in London, we are thrilled to now help transform this modernist campus into a vibrant public arts destination serving the Bay Area and beyond.” – Simon Demeuse, Partner in Charge
Just as the Eameses explored the world and their designs in a very open manner, leading to new ways of understanding and seeing their surroundings, this project will allow its stewards and visitors to experience the collections and exhibits in an open manner as well, with dynamic perspectives and vantage points that will enable the museum to offer moments of discovery and reflection through thoughtful engagement.
As the lead design consultants, Herzog & de Meuron will be supported by San Francisco-based EHDD as executive architects.
