Herzog & de Meuron

PHILADELPHIA, USA — Calder Gardens marked its opening today with an on-site ribbon-cutting attended by local officials, Calder Gardens leadership, Herzog & de Meuron, and local and international media. The event begins a week of celebrations culminating in the public opening on Sunday, September 21.

Departing from the traditional museum format, the project unfolds as a sequence of interior and garden spaces where architecture and landscape meet. Visitors will encounter a wide range of works by Alexander Calder both indoors and outdoors in rotating installations, including rarely seen pieces, some on public view for the first time.

In keeping with the spirit of discovery, Calder’s mobiles, stabiles, paintings, and drawings are presented without wall labels or didactic text, inviting visitors to spend time with the works and form their own readings at their own pace, in dialogue with the surrounding city.
