Objects

Herzog & de Meuron conceive buildings as coherent wholes, from the load-bearing structure down to the furniture. In the course of developing our projects, we have designed over 600 Objects: pieces of furniture, light fixtures, textiles, and architectural details, such as coat hooks or door handles. These Objects are tailor-made for specific buildings, places and the people that use them. H&dM Objects manages the pool of existing Objects and creates new ones led by the Atelier and in collaboration with manufacturers, factories, and skilled craftspeople. Process

The development of an Object is driven by exploration between the analogue and the digital, along with a fascination with materials and craftmanship. The characteristics and means of processing materials like wood, glass, metal, or cork are as important to us as their texture and patina. A combination of rigorous research and design, with a freedom for discovery through trial and error, stimulates our creativity and distinct output. This entire research and development process gives these Objects an appeal beyond the original context of their creation.
