The Brief

The client’s express wish, from the beginning, was not to have the new REHAB centre look or feel like a hospital. So, what were we not supposed to do? What is a hospital? Elevators and indoor corridors flanked by countless doors leading to rooms or examination rooms a waiting lounge at the end of the hall or next to the elevator. The same pattern repeated on as many floors as permitted by zoning regulations – an economic solution because it is repetitive to the extreme and requires no modification of staff behavior.

A rehabilitation centre is a place where people live for up to 18 months, usually after an accident. It is a place where they learn to cope with their changed lives in order to become as independent as possible again. During the day they work with therapists and doctors; they live there and spend their free time there, they meet their families and friends. They have a daily routine just as we do, but with one significant difference: everything happens in one place.

Because the patients are so restricted, because they have to stay at the REHAB centre for such a long time, we have set ourselves the task of designing a multifunctional, diversified building, almost like a small town with streets, plazas, gardens, public facilities, and more secluded residential quarters where people take different paths to move from A to B. We have tried to create surroundings that allow the patients as much autonomy as possible.

The Architecture

The new REHAB centre is a horizontal building on two floors, in which wheelchair users and pedestrians can easily move from one place to another: therapy and medical facilities are on the ground floor; the patients’ rooms on the second floor.

The connection between indoor and outdoor spaces was our primary architectural concern. The complex is conceived from inside out: instead of an arrangement of structures, courtyards are placed in a large rectangle. They serve as orientation and allow daylight to penetrate the entire interior. Only then did we proceed with the development of the individual rooms. In keeping with the analogy of a town plan, we thought in terms of streets and plazas in front of houses. This is still the first impression of the REHAB centre today; you walk in through a large courtyard, the centre of which is a cultivated field. In other words, you enter the complex through an outdoor space. From the main lobby, various inner courtyards provide orientation: one is filled with water, another is clad entirely in wood, the bathhouse is placed in the third, etc. You proceed along them until you reach your destination.

When you have arrived, you realize that the “houses” vary considerably; places like the gym or the workshops, as well as the patients’ rooms are defined by large windowpanes and views of the landscape, with a seamless transition between inside and outside. Other rooms, however, are entirely inwards in orientation; the most obvious example is the bathhouse, placed in one of the central courtyards like an erratic block wrapped in black rubber. Numerous small round holes in the low-slung roof make what looks spectacular from the outside very intimate from within. In the painting workshop and library, both on the roof, the view into the distance is staged: one can look back into the city or out into the expanses of the Alsace.

The diversified design offers patients and their relatives a building that does justice to the complexity of their needs. There are places where one can retreat and be alone and others in which to enjoy company. And there are also non-territorial places that are not assigned to a specific function, small places for the times in between treatments, for conversation with relatives, or for staff members during their breaks. The REHAB is an open, permeable, breathing building.

Wood of different kinds and uses is the predominant material on the façades and inside. One might speak of a kind of pavilion or garden architecture, beginning with the continuous terraces along the rooms on the second floor. Delicate structures of wooden rods, horizontally interwoven in some places, vertically inserted into the ground in others, guide cloth awnings or function as screens to provide privacy. The Plexiglas dowels that link these wooden rods glisten like beads when light falls on them.

These beads have a big sister in the patients’ rooms; in the middle of the curved, hollow ceiling, there is a transparent plastic sphere two meters in diameter. Somewhat like the eye of the room, it offers patients laying in bed a view of the sky. And it makes the room, despite its wide veranda, so bright that one almost feels as if one is outside. The veranda has been made wide enough to wheel patients lying in bed outdoors in good weather.

After the existing REHAB centre to the south is demolished, landscape architects August + Margrith Künzel – with whom we have already collaborated on the design of interior courtyards – will supervise the planting of kitchen and ornamental gardens there and to the west. These gardens aim to integrate the REHAB centre into the surrounding countryside with its family gardens. To the north, a playing field and a training course are available to wheelchair users in the summer.

Transformation & Extension

In 2018, REHAB decided to establish a new SAP ward, a station geared towards patients with behavioural disorders, and to use the premises of the previous day clinic on the ground floor for this purpose. The only conversion required since the clinic was commissioned in 2000, it demonstrates for the first time how flexible REHAB’s basic architectural and technical configuration is. Today, the SAP ward appears as if it has always been there, fitting in seamlessly with the existing building.

The primary scope of the conversion is the creation of patient rooms with bathrooms on the ground floor, which previously existed in the REHAB only on the upper floor; Associated functions such as a kitchen and recreation rooms are included. The inner courtyard is reduced by half to make room for a new therapy area. The garden, which is so important for the specific therapeutic concept of the SAP ward, including its wooden enclosure wall and the inner courtyard, is redesigned in cooperation with landscape architects August + Margrith Künzel and supplemented with additional planting.

Before this conversion could take place, the day clinic had to be relocated – for this purpose, an extension in lightweight timber construction was built on the roof in 2019, for which the building had been structurally prepared in 2002. Four large spaces used by patients during their therapy breaks are positioned next to one another – a dining area with open kitchen, a living room, and two rest/recovery relaxation rooms – alongside a central spine of servicing functions such as changing rooms and offices. There are no corridors; every square meter is usable space. A covered veranda, with a view over a planted roof towards Alsace, extends the interior space. The roof over this new “house” was erected in a day like the roof of a hangar. The details are derived from the existing building. As with the SAP ward on the ground floor, only a very attentive visitor notices that something has been changed.

Der Auftrag

Die Bauherrschaft formulierte für die Architekten von Anfang an einen ausdrücklichen Wunsch: das neue REHAB sollte nicht wie ein Spital wirken. Was sollten wir also nicht tun? Was ist denn ein Spital? Lifte und innenliegende Gänge, daran unzählbare Türen zu Zimmern oder Untersuchungsräumen, am Ende des Flurs oder beim Lift eine Wartezone. Das ganze auf so vielen Etagen wiederholt, wie es der Bebauungsplan zulässt – eine wirtschaftliche Lösung weil in hohem Masse repetitiv, und verlangt vom Personal kein Umdenken. Und in der Eingangshalle eine Cafeteria.

Ein Rehabilitationszentrum ist ein Ort, an dem Menschen meist nach einem Unfall bis zu 18 Monate lang leben. Sie lernen, ihren veränderten Alltag so selbständig wie möglich in den Griff zu nehmen. Sie arbeiten tagsüber mit den Therapeuten und Ärzten, wohnen und verbringen ihre Freizeit hier, treffen ihre Familien und Freunde. Ein Tagesablauf wie unserer auch, mit dem Unterschied: es findet alles an einem Ort statt.

Weil die Patienten also in ihrem Wirkungsradius so eingeschränkt sind, für eine lange Zeit nur im REHAB sein können, haben wir uns zur Vorgabe gemacht, ein reiches, ein vielfältiges, ein abwechslungsreiches Gebäude zu entwerfen, eher eine kleine Stadt als nur ein Haus, mit Strassen, Plätzen, Gärten, öffentlichen Einrichtungen und privateren Wohnvierteln, wo man auf verschiedenen Wegen von A nach B gelangt. Wir haben versucht, eine Anlage zu schaffen, die dem Patienten so viel Selbstbestimmung wie möglich erlaubt.

Die Architektur

Das neue REHAB ist eine horizontale Anlage auf zwei Geschossen, in der sich Rollstuhlfahrer und Fussgänger einfach von einem Ort zum andern bewegen können: alle Therapien und Untersuchungseinrichtungen sind im Erdgeschoss, die Bettenstationen im Obergeschoss.

Die Verbindung von Aussen- und Innenräumen ist das zentrale architektonische Thema. Der Komplex ist von innen her gedacht: statt Baukörper anzuordnen wurden Höfe in ein grosses Rechteck gesetzt. Die Höfe dienen zur Orientierung und bringen Tageslicht bis ins Innerste hinein. Erst danach wurden die einzelnen Räume entwickelt. Um nochmals die Analogie des Stadtplaners zu verwenden: wir haben die Strassen und Plätze vor den Häusern gedacht. Und so erfährt man das REHAB heute auch: man betritt es durch einen grossen Hof, in dessen Mitte ein Acker angepflanzt ist, also durch einen Aussenraum. In der Eingangshalle angelangt, orientiert man sich an den verschiedenen Innenhöfen: einer ist mit Wasser gefüllt, ein anderer ist vollständig mit Holz aus-gekleidet, im dritten steht das Badehaus usw. – und geht an ihnen entlang bis man sein Ziel erreicht hat.

Beim Betreten des Gebäudes zeigt sich, dass auch die einzelnen „Häuser“ sehr unterschiedlich sind: es gibt Orte wie die Turnhalle oder die Werkstätten, aber auch das Patientenzimmer, die sich über grosse Verglasungen und Ausblicke in die Landschaft definieren, wo der Innenraum fliessend nach draussen übergeht. Andere sind im Gegensatz dazu ganz nach innen gerichtet: am exemplarischsten dafür ist das Badehaus, das wie ein Findling in schwarzem Gummi eingepackt, in einem der zentralen Höfe steht. Viele kleine runde Löcher im tief herunter-reichenden Dach machen das von aussen Spektakuläre von innen sehr intim. Im Malsaal oder in der Bibliothek auf dem Dach ist die Fernsicht inszeniert: der Blick schweift hinaus in die Weite des Elsass oder zurück in die Stadt.

Mit der Vielfalt der Gestaltung wird den Patienten und ihren Angehörigen ein Gebäude angeboten, das der Vielschichtigkeit ihrer Bedürfnisse Rechnung trägt. Da ist Raum für Rückzug und Alleinsein, aber auch für Begegnungen. Und es gibt non-territoriale Orte, die nicht einer Funktion zugeordnet sind, kleine Orte für die Zeiten ausserhalb des Therapieprogramms, für ein Gespräch mit Angehörigen, oder auch für Mitarbeiter in ihren Pausen. Ein offenes, durchlässiges, ein atmendes Haus.

Das vorherrschende Material an den Fassaden und im Innenraum ist Holz, in unterschiedlichen Sorten und Anwendungen. Es ist eine Art Pavillon- oder auch Gartenarchitektur, ausgehend von den umgehenden Terrassen vor den Zimmern im Obergeschoss. Feine Strukturen aus runden Hölzern, manchmal horizontal als Gewebe, an anderen Orten vertikal in den Boden gesteckt, sind Brüstungen, führen textile Sonnenstoren oder dienen wie ein Paravent als Sichtschutz. Diese Holzprofile sind mit Dübeln aus Plexiglas verbunden, die im entsprechenden Licht wie Leuchtkugeln schimmern.

Das Element dieser Kugeln findet sich im Patientenzimmer wieder: mitten in der gebogenen Hohldecke liegt eine zwei Meter grosse transparente Kugel aus Kunststoff. Sie ist so etwas wie des Zimmers Auge und verschafft den liegenden Patienten Ausblick zum Himmel. Und macht das Zimmer trotz seiner tiefen Veranda so hell, dass man sich drinnen fast schon wie draussen fühlt. Die Veranda ist ihrerseits so tief, dass man die Patienten, die im Bett liegen, bei schönem Wetter nach draussen fahren kann.

Nach dem Abbruch des bestehenden REHAB im Süden entstehen sowohl dort als auch im Westen eine Reihe von Nutz- und Ziergärten, gestaltet vom Landschaftsarchitekten August Künzel, mit dem wir schon die Innenhöfe zusammen erarbeitet haben. Diese Gärten sollen das REHAB in die umgebende Kulturlandschaft mit den Familiengärten einbinden. Im Norden bieten ein Sportplatz und ein Parcours für Rollstuhlfahrer Trainings-gelegenheiten für den Sommer.

Umbau, Erweiterung

Das REHAB entschliesst sich 2018 eine neue Station für verhaltensauffällige Patientinnen und Patienten (SAP-Station) zu gründen, und dafür die Räumlichkeiten der bisherigen Tagesklinik im Erdgeschoss zu nutzen. Mit diesem Umbau 18 Jahre nach Inbetriebnahme der Klinik wird zum ersten Mal nachgewiesen, wie flexibel ihre architektonische und technische Grunddisposition ist. Wer heute durch die neue SAP-Station geht, kann nicht ahnen, dass sie nicht schon immer da war.

Im Wesentlichen werden Patientenzimmer mit Bädern eingebaut, welche es bisher im REHAB nur im Obergeschoss gab, und ihre zugehörigen Funktionen wie Küche und Aufenthaltsräume. Der Innenhof wird auf die Hälfte verkleinert, um Platz für neue Therapierräume zu schaffen. Der für das spezifische therapeutische Konzept so wichtige Garten wird inklusive seiner hölzernen Umfassungswand und dem Innenhof in Zusammenarbeit mit den Landschaftsarchitekten August + Margrith Künzel neu gestaltet und mit zusätzlichen Pflanzen ergänzt.

Bevor dieser Umbau stattfinden konnte, musste die Tagesklinik umziehen- hierfür wurde 2019 auf dem Dach eine Aufstockung in Holz-Leichtbauweise hinzugefügt, für die das Gebäude schon 2002 strukturell vorbereitet worden war. 4 grosse Räume für den Aufenthalt der Patienten während ihrer Therapiepausen sind aneinandergefügt, eine Essküche, ein Wohnzimmer und zwei Ruheräume, mit dienenden Räumen wie Umkleiden und Büros in einer zentralen Schicht. Es gibt keine Korridore, jeder Quadratmeter ist Nutzfläche. Eine überdachte Veranda, mit Blick über ein intensiv begrüntes Dach in Richtung Elsass ins Freie, erweitert den Innenraum. Das Dach über diesem neuen «Haus» wurde in einem Tag aufgestellt wie eine Halle, und die Details sind aus der bestehenden REHAB abgeleitet. Auch hier merkt nur ein sehr aufmerksamer Besucher, dass etwas verändert wurde.

The patients of REHAB Basel were the subject of ‘Rehab (from rehab)’ (2023) by artists filmmakers Bêka & Lemoine. The focus of the documentary is on the patients and therapists, and on the culture of care that is cultivated in the building. The film is now available to watch online.
