Our practice in Germany has developed over time, to the point where the region is now one of Herzog & de Meuron’s most important locations. We have had offices in various cities since the 1990’s. Projects like Galerie Goetz, the Allianz Arena and the Elbphilharmonie have pushed the boundaries of their typologies, made an international impact, and were catalysts for our practice.
The Berlin studio evolved out of a need to work closely on Am Tacheles – a large, mixed-use, centrally located city block where we create new squares and alleys and reinterpret the historic Friedrichstrasse shopping arcade. Not long after Am Tacheles was underway, we won the competition for The Neue Nationalgalerie – Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sited between Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie and Scharoun’s Berliner Philharmonie, the museum will be an important addition to the cultural life of the city – it has sparked conversations ranging from aesthetics to the ecological impact of what it means to house and protect valuable works of art today. In the Berlin studio, we are developing Hamburg Grasbrook in collaboration with the municipal authorities, a combined residential and working neighborhood; ambitious goals have been set regarding sustainability for this large-scale transformation in the former port.
Our studio in Berlin ensures strategic partnerships with planners, close contact with our clients, onsite presence throughout the development and execution of projects, and reflects our long-term commitment to the German capital. Our Berlin team embodies Herzog & de Meuron’s culture, work ethic, and professionalism. They are well-versed in regional planning regulations and construction methodologies and are involved from initial contact with all stakeholders to the handover of a finished project.
