Herzog & de Meuron

BASEL, SWITZERLAND, 27 October 2020 – Herzog & de Meuron has been commissioned to propose a concept for the renovation of Hauptpost Basel through selection from a competition. It was announced today that owner AXA Anlagestiftung has granted a planning loan to sensitively refurbish and develop a new scheme for the post office building at Freie Strasse 12/Gerbergasse 13.

The competition was held by AXA among Basel-based architecture firms during summer 2019 and stated a clear brief; to respect the listed building and, simultaneously, design a mixed-use project fit for the future. Situated within the historic fabric of Basel, the building holds great potential for preservation and accommodating a variety of contemporary use. Hauptpost consists of many layers; with its origins dating back to the 15th century, the building underwent multiple transformations culminating in the 19th century sandstone facade that we see today. Alongside necessary works to reinforce and modernize the structure and technical installations, the building’s multifaceted identity and appearance will be duly maintained. Our central aim lies in improving accessibility and permeability within the interior space, while facilitating for new programs in a key location in the city center.

AXA has commissioned us to develop a building permission planning with an aim to submit an application in summer 2021. At the earliest, first renovation work will begin mid-2022.
