Santiago Espitia Berndt (b. 1985, Colombia / Germany) earned his degree in architecture in 2011 at the ETH Zurich, with the ETH-Medal and the ETH Hatt-Bucher Prize for his independent master study about the river Rhine at Studio Basel, under Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. Immediately thereafter, he started to work at Herzog & de Meuron, became an Associate in 2017 and Partner in 2020.

Besides several important competitions won under Santiago’s lead (such as the new building University Hospital in Basel), the spectrum of projects he has shaped ranges from small scale architectural interventions up to large-scale urban planning. One example is the development of the urban district around the heritage-protected Paketposthalle in Munich-Neuhausen.

The list of architectural projects includes the Jade residential tower in Miami, National Library of Israel in Jerusalem, the Campus for the Berggruen Institute in Los Angeles and Elementum, a large-scale refurbishment and extension for a multi-tenant office building in the centre of Munich.
