Conversion of a Powerstation

NEW YORK, USA, March 2017 – The 113-year-old coal power plant on Gowanus Canal – situated in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, the western most portion of Long Island – will become a manufacturing center for the arts called Powerhouse Workshop. Herzog & de Meuron has been commissioned to reinvent and enlarge the site. The central design elements include the renovation of the existing Turbine Hall and the reconstruction of the Boiler House. The idea of the Powerhouse Environmental Arts Foundation is to revive this zone of the city and to turn it into a thriving production center for the arts and crafts.
