14 Jun 2014 - 14 ROOMS OPENING

“14 Rooms” exhibition for Art Basel opens
BASEL, SWITZERLAND, 13 June 2014 – Presented by Fondation Beyeler, Art Basel and Theater Basel, and curated by Klaus Biesenbach and Hans Ulrich Obrist, ’14 Rooms’ is a major live-art exhibition presented in Basel from June 14 to June 22, 2014. The event includes performative works by a group of 14 international artists, each being staged in an individual space. Herzog & de Meuron have supported ’14 Rooms’ through a collaborative effort in designing the overall exhibition. While ‘14 Rooms’ is taking place in the oldest trade fair hall in Basel, the geographical location is irrelevant. The anonymous quality of the exhibition design is meant to emphasize the immediate experience of the visitors as they engage with the artworks. The series of fourteen rooms is divided in two across a broad interior street, with a white painted facade punctuated only by seven mirrored doors, facing an identical facade. The mirrored walls at either end of this street, along with the mirrored doors placed opposite one another within each facade, multiply the reading of the fourteen doors in their reflections. The doors are differentiated from one another only by their digitally cut wooden door handles, each of which varies slightly in shape and texture.
