Roche Building 1 Construction Starts
BASEL, SWITZERLAND, 09 MAY 2012 – The foundation stone for Roche Building 1 was laid today on the Roche Site in Basel. The 178 m tall tapering structure is formed by superimposed floor slabs which narrow as the highrise ascends. This simple and characteristic shape, as well as the height of the building will anchor the Roche Site firmly within the urban setting of Basel. Roche commissioned Herzog & de Meuron in 2009 to design a new office building for the Basel Site, in order to concentrate various departments that had been scattered throughout the city. The main design focus was the creation of a new highrise typology fostering internal organisation and communication. 42 storeys-high, Roche Building 1 will house around 2’000 workstations, numerous meeting rooms, a staff restaurant and a 500-seat auditorium. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
