060 MASTER PLAN FOR THE UNIVERSITÉ DE BOURGOGNE

060
Master Plan for the Université de Bourgogne
Dijon, France
Project 1989-1990

The campus is situated to the east of Dijon, mainly consisting of buildings of the 1950s by the French architect Barade. The grand institutions with their lightly coloured limestone cladding give the campus its character.

Confronted by the imminent expansion and new construction of numerous institutes and housing units, the University commissioned Rémy Zaugg and Herzog & de Meuron to develop a master plan. This project is the first in a series of collaborations with Rémy Zaugg, which also include Antipodes I, Berlin Morgen, Urban Study Basel, and Munich Museums.

The plan has clarified the existing urban qualities structuring the campus according to buildable and unbuildable zones that, within the overall urban context, fit into the existing radial block system. The campus’ urban isolation can thus be broken down by means of its connection to the existing fabric and may be complemented by infrastructures of daily life, such as restaurants and shops.
