NATAL, BRAZIL, 26 October 2011 – As part of a larger urban vision for the neighbourhood of Mãe Luiza in Natal, plans for a new Gymnasium at the School of Dinarte Martiz were unveiled today by the local organisation Centro Sócio Pastoral Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao (Centro Sócio).
The overall urban concept was developed by Herzog & de Meuron together with Centro Sócio in 2009 and takes into account the potential and challenges of the neighbourhood. The design process entailed identifying the missing or underdeveloped urban activities, spotting available spaces within the densely built-up area and distributing the new activities within the areas potentially available for development. This approach allows the evolution of Mãe Luiza to stem from the particular needs of its community and the specific potential of the site.
The Gymnasium is the pioneering architectural project of this master plan, as it will create a new public venue including a sports field seating 350 as well as an array of multifunctional spaces for the people Mãe Luiza.
