Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux Inaugurated
BORDEAUX, FRANCE, 18 May 2015 – The new Bordeaux stadium will be inaugurated today by the Mayor of Bordeaux, Alain Juppé. In 2011, Herzog & de Meuron with the construction groups Vinci and Fayat were selected as the consortium that would design and build the new Bordeaux stadium. The city needed a new structure to welcome the Euro 2016 as the existing Chaban-Delmas stadium, built in 1938, did not meet the demands of large international sports competitions. After construction started in 2013, the new stadium was delivered last month, on time and on budget.

The new Bordeaux stadium appears light and open; it is elegant, if such a term can be used for a building of this size. Its purity and geometrical clarity inspire a sense of monumentality and gracefulness. The grand stairs blur the boundaries between inside and outside and countless columns standing on the stairs accompany the visitors on their way in and out of the stadium. The fusion of stairs and columns forms a gesture of openness and accessibility. The diaphanous volume of the stadium opens up to the surrounding landscape. Its transparency reveals all the energy and activities that will transform this piece of land into a new and vibrant part of Bordeaux.

The new stadium will welcome its first football match, the FC Girondins against Montpellier, on Saturday 23rd May.
