Herzog & de Meuron, Transforming Park Avenue Armory, New York
VENICE, ITALY, 06 June 2014 – What is an adequate strategy for architects to deal with existing structures? This question has long been a core issue of Herzog & de Meuron, who began exploring the potential of the existing, of a specific context and its hidden strengths, very early on. Key examples include Tate Modern, Küppersmühle Museum, CaixaForum Madrid, and more recently, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion and Musée Unterlinden.

A further example of this practice of preservation and transformation is the Park Avenue Armory where Herzog & de Meuron have been developing a multifaceted strategy combining restoration, renovation, and reconstruction. The extensive research and investigation process and how each room was approached in every detail are now documented in a comprehensive book. Conceived by Herzog & de Meuron and Park Avenue Armory, and edited by Gerhard Mack, this monograph is now available through Birkhäuser, notably the publishers of “Herzog & de Meuron, The Complete Works”.

At the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia, preservation and transformation will be the topic of a round table: On Friday 06 June at 11.00am, Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, Chris Dercon and Hans Ulrich Obrist will engage in a conversation on "Preservation" as part of a Marathon talk series at the Swiss Pavilion. The Marathon will be streamed live.
