Vitra Schaudepot, Vitra Campus
WEIL AM RHEIN, GERMANY – 3 June 2016, the Vitra Schaudepot on the Vitra Campus opens its doors to the public. On this occasion Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron and Rolf Fehlbaum (Chairman Emeritus of Vitra) talk about the Schaudepot as a new place for design on the Vitra Campus.

The Schaudepot provides the Vitra Design Museum with a venue to present key objects from its extensive furniture collection to the public. The museum’s collection of furniture design is one of the most important in the world. It comprises over 7'000 pieces of furniture, 1'000 examples of lighting, as well as several archives and the private estates of Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton and Alexander Girard.

With the opening of the Vitra Schaudepot a second entry point to the Vitra Campus will be created. Visitors arriving from the nearby train and tram stations will be greeted by a slightly raised, generously spaced plaza connected with the entrance to the Vitra Schaudepot. This new entry point makes the Vitra Campus more accessible and enhances connections to the cities of Basel and Weil am Rhein.

Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, Founding Partners, Herzog & de Meuron:
“The Vitra Campus is characterised by its architectural diversity, which reflects Rolf Fehlbaum’s insatiable curiosity and love for contemporary architecture and design. We have been able to contribute two buildings. First the VitraHaus, iconic and visible from afar, which opened in 2010, and now the Schaudepot, which bears practically no traces of its makers. It was in fact originally planned as an underground warehouse, without any form of architectural expression. Together with Rolf Fehlbaum, however, we finally opted for an archetypical architecture that reveals little of its origin: its period or the architects behind it.”
